About PriceHike
PriceHike tracks the public pricing of 318 popular Shopify apps so merchants can see when, and by how much, their tools get more expensive.
How the data is collected
- Daily snapshots. Once a day an automated job fetches each app's public Shopify App Store listing at a slow, polite rate and records the plans and prices shown in its pricing section (all listed in USD). It identifies itself as
PriceHikeBotwith a contact address. 2 daily snapshots so far. - Archived history. Earlier pricing is reconstructed from captures of each listing in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine (from 2022). We sample captures and narrow down each change to the closest pair of captures. Archived history is available for 160 of 318 apps so far; the rest is being added.
- Change detection. Plans are matched by name (free tiers are matched as the free tier). We record price increases and decreases, plans added and removed, and delistings. Percentages are only given when the billing period is the same.
- Pricing model changes. A higher number isn't always a price hike. When the old price was an introductory or "from" price, when a plan's allowance changed (more orders, sessions, products or contacts for the money), or when the tiers were re-cut so that a new plan took over the old price, we label the change pricing model change and explain why on the app page. These are left out of Biggest hikes and Latest price hikes. The largest increases are checked by hand against the archived captures before they are ranked.
How to read a change
We only know when we saw a price, not when the developer changed it. So every change is shown as "between X and Y": X is the last observation with the old pricing and Y the first with the new pricing, each linked to its archived copy or our snapshot. If pricing returns to the previous state within 90 days we flag the change as reverted (often an experiment or a glitch) and leave it out of the feeds.
"Paid plans from" is the cheapest paid monthly plan listed. "Cheaper alternatives" are apps in the same category whose cheapest paid monthly plan is lower. Usage-based charges, annual discounts and pricing shown only on developers' own sites are not included, so always check the listing before you buy.
What we don't do
We never invent or estimate prices: if it isn't in a snapshot or an archived capture, it isn't on the site. We don't accept payment for coverage. PriceHike is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Shopify or any app developer. App names are trademarks of their owners.
